January 9-12 NCAA D1 Track Summary - NCAA D1 Indoor Track and Field

The UAB Blazer Classic had many of the top performances on this big first weekend of the indoor season.  There were 6 NCAA D1 collegiate leading marks and 21 top four performances. Other meets had some NCAA leading marks.

 

The top sprinting marks were located in the south this weekend.  Houston sophomore Leshon Collins lowered his collegiate leading mark to 6.60 and beat Olympian Trell Kimmons (6.62) in the process.  Antwon Wright of Florida won the 60m B section in 6.63 (#2 NC D1) to beat 2012 NCAA indoor runner-up Michael Granger of Mississippi (6.69) and teammate Hugh Graham Jr won the A Section in 6.66 (#4 NC D1) . At Clemson in the Orange and Purple Classic, Tevin Hester won the 60 in 6.64 (#3). At the Ohio State Buckeye Classic. Senior Chesna Sykes led a strong Buckeye performance by running 7.35 (=#3), just ahead of teammate Ashlee Abraham (7.36, #5).  

 

Florida’s Arman Hall won the UAB invite in a collegiate leading 20.80.  Ebony Eutsey of Florida ran ran the second-fastest NCAA D1 time of 23.70, beating DII champion Danielle Williams of Johnson C Smith.  Troy Pollard of Florida A&M ran the #4 NCAA D1 time to win the UAB Invite (47.51).  Chrishuna Williams of Arkansas won the 200 (24.21, #6 NCAA D1) and a collegiate leader in the 400 (53.52) at the Arkansas Invite.  Maddison Reynolds of Oral Roberts won the Bill Easton Double Duals 440 yards in 55.37 to move to #4 on the college list.

 

Elinor Cook of UAB won her home meet over 3000 meters (9:14.10) and moved to #2 on the collegiate list.  2013 NCAA D1 indoor 3k runner-up Kemoy Campbell of Arkansas won the Arkansas Invitational tri-meet 800 in 1:52.01 (#5 NCAA D1).

 

After the UAB Blazer Invitational there were new D1 leaders in the 60m hurdles.  Clemson transfer Bridgette Owens, now with Florida, took the early collegiate lead at 8.20.  Ohio State went 1-2 in the men’s 60 meter hurdles at the Ohio State Buckeye Classic and moved to 1-2 on the D1 collegiate list as senior Demoye Bogle (7.65) beat his freshman teammate Donovan Robertson (7.74). Alexis Franklin of Ohio State was second in the women’s 60m hurdles in 8.35 (#4 D1).  Defending collegiate indoor champion Eddie Lovett of Florida won the UAB Invite in 7.81 (#4 D1).  Freshman Omar McLeod of Arkansas won the Arkansas Invitational tri-meet in 7.82 (#5).  Evonne Britton of Penn State won the Penn State Indoor Relays in 8.27 (#3 D1) over Taranisha Taylor of Pittsburgh in 8.39 (#7 D1).  Erica Twiss of Kansas State won the Bill Easton Double Duals in 8.36 (#4 NCAA D1) over outdoor heptathlon champion Lindsay Vollmer of Kansas in 8.47 (#13 D1).  

 

The Florida (Glass, Graham Jr, frosh Uruburu, Hall) men won in 3:06.11 over Florida State (Russell, Locke, Frosh Cherry, Harris) 3:07.70 at the UAB Blazer Invite to move to #1 and #3 on the NCAA DI 4x400 meter list.   The Arkansas men finished off a dominating performance at the Arkansas team invitational by moving to fifth on the D1 list ( 3:09.08).  Florida (Reynolds, Gause, Jefferson, Eutsey) also won the women’s relay in 3:37.83 to take over the early D1 lead.  Penn State took the early Men’s D1 DMR lead in 9:59.94 (#1 D1) at the Penn State Indoor Relays by beating St Joseph’s in 10:02.75 (#3 D1).  Connecticut took the Yale Collegiate Invitational in 10:05.93 (#4 D1).  The Penn State women also took the women’s lead (11:44.84).   

 

James Harris wore his new Florida State kit for the first time and won the UAB Blazer Invite in the high jump at 7-3 3/4 to take the early collegiate lead.  Alexander Bowen jr of Albany moved to second at 7-2 1/2 by winning the Penn State Indoor Relays.  Maryland teammates Thea Lafond and Amina Smith went 1-2 at the Penn State Indoor relays at 5-11 1/4 while defending NCAA outdoor heptathlon champion Lindsay Vollmer of Kansas took second at the Bill Easton double duals and also cleared 5-11 1/4.  

 

Defending NCAA outdoor champion Sam Kendricks of Mississippi equaled his indoor pr at the Blazer Invitational with a 5.61m clearance of 18-4 3/4 to take the collegiate lead and he had a clean slate and did not attempt another height.   Sophomore Shawn Barber of Akron won the Akron opener at 5.53m, 18-1 3/4. Jade Riebold of Eastern Illinois  moved to second on the collegiate list at 4.30, 14-1 1/4 to win the Illini Open.  Defending NCAA champion Natalia Bartnovskaya if Kansas won the Bill Easton Double Duals at 4.15m. 13-7 1/4.  

 

Sophomore Robin Reynolds of Florida won the UAB Blazer Invitational at 20-11 1/4 to take the NCAA D1 lead.  Multi-eventer Thea Lafound added a triple jump win (42-2) to her high jump win to get her second collegiate leader.  Sophomore Chukwuebuka Enekwechi of Purdue improved on his first week performances by getting  two wins at the Gene Edmunds Cup and set a collegiate leader in the weight throw at 73-0.
